Criminal and civil investigations led by the Fraud Investigation Service have an important part to play in addressing instances of tax fraud. Tax Professionals within the Fraud Investigation Service investigate and assist in investigating complex and high-value cases involving corporates and high net worth individuals. It’s a challenging and ever-changing specialism that requires real team-work and adaptability.
You will apply your detailed understanding of tax law and business to unravel tax fraud by some of the best advised and most determined corporations and individuals in the country. You’ll help gather vital evidence on individuals and companies and prepare cases for court or tribunal. The work is very varied – you could be identifying fraudulent documents, conducting interviews, making arrests or attending court yourself, both to give evidence and to obtain orders and warrants. You’ll be working as part of a highly skilled team to identify robust evidence to help us win highly complex and challenging cases.
You may have an investigative or intelligence background, or else a naturally inquisitive mind. But you’ll also need the ability to build a rapport with a wide range of different people. Teamwork is vital to what we do, and you’ll have what it takes to be a valued team member.
Tax Professionals must also hold or obtain a direct tax CTA (ATII) or an equivalent HMRC qualification (TPDP or predecessor qualifications: ITS2, IDP, CPT, FT2) or hold an accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, ICAS, Chartered Accountants Ireland) with a strong tax element. All Tax Professionals must have a strong current working knowledge of Income Tax, VAT, Employment Duties, Customs Duties or Corporation tax law and practice.

Training plays a crucial part in our work here. As well as core training and a structured induction, your role-specific training will include a combination of theoretical and practical subjects – from intelligence practice and methodology, case-building skills and investigative interviewing, to taking witness statements, giving evidence and more.
